Vision and Mission
|
Whether examining regional conflict, economic uncertainty, regional trade initiatives such as the TPP, or maritime territorial dispute crises, today’s complex Asia-Pacific challenges require a new approach in the study of a new direction to define a strategic agenda for the US-Taiwan relationship. The Institute for Taiwan-America Studies (ITAS) was established to provide a venue in Washington to address this vital need. The institute’s thought leadership, scholarship, and strategy will provide future leaders the unrivaled opportunity to raise consciousness of US-Taiwan policy issues in a bilateral, regional and global context.
Drawing on lessons of history, the ITAS will integrate excellence in scholarship with policy engagement and the study of diplomacy to prepare future leaders in the study of US-Taiwan relations and increasing mutual understanding. This approach will allow the institute to expand in ways that enable its colleagues to better understand, analyze, and learn from the great events of statecraft to ensure they are prepared to address changing US-Taiwan relations and make a positive impact around the Asia-Pacific. |
In understanding its role and responsibility as a leading US-Taiwan relations think tank, ITAS will strive to set new targets for Washington and Taipei to achieve greater prosperity. With its eyes on the non-diplomatic relationship horizon, ITAS will focus on research activity that can provide vision and direction for greater prosperity. In doing so, ITAS will answer the need for growth equations suited to the ever-changing trilateral equation involving Washington-Taipei-Beijing.
ITAS will uphold its mission to make substantive contributions to the US government and society as well as to the public and private sectors by providing timely and effective policy alternatives. By continuously executing the mission, ITAS will propose policy recommendations that will become the core foundation for the trilateral dynamics of Taiwan-US-China relations. In addition, ITAS will maximize its organizational capacity to become an US-Taiwan policy institute that serves as a compass for a robust unofficial relationship policymaker. |
